Parent Ed in Napa
Late last year, Napa Valley Adult Education received the California School Boards Association 2008 Golden Bell Award for its First Step and Next Step programs.
According to the association, the awards recognize exemplary programs in 16 major categories, including curriculum and instruction, as well as related programs which are essential to support teaching and learning.
Napa Valley Adult Education offers these programs each summer to help English learners and their parents prepare for entering the public schools. Instructors teach parents how to advocate for their child, communicate with teachers, and monitor a child’s progress in school. The First Step program is funded by First 5 Napa, the Napa Valley Vintners Auction Napa Valley and the E. Richard Jones Family Foundation.
Assistant Principal Mariyln Knight-Mendelson told local reporters, “The award is a justification of the hard work we’ve done and a recognition of the importance of what we’re doing.
